Jillian Michaels is Right About The Keto Diet
If you haven't seen this video yet, check it out fam. Jillian Michaels, that trainer we all hated on The Biggest Loser, has been getting shat on in the low carb community for her criticism of the keto diet. But the truth is that Jillian is actually right, the keto diet is dangerous, for her career. Keto is all the rage these days and it has become abundantly clear to me and many others enamoured with nutrition science that a high fat diet is beneficial in so many ways. But Jillian is living in the past. Her entire career is predicated on the old belief that to lose weight you should eat frequently, restrict your calories, and exercise all the time. Well in short, that ancient viewpoint has been debunked. I won't bore you with too much scientific data to prove how wrong Jillian is. But I will touch upon some huge misinformation presented in this video. And I will explain why I believe Ms. Michaels is desperately trying anything to re-ignite her career.
Ketosis is a state of emergency Okay, no. Just no. Are you fucking kidding me Jillian? Ketosis is necessary for our survival. Although today food is plentiful, our ancestors did not always have access to food. They would sometimes go days without consuming anything. So ketosis is just a survival method. It allowed us to convert fat into energy (ketones). And this is actually a good thing. It's called metabolic flexibility. This means our body is capable of obtaining energy from both carbs (glucose) and fat (ketones). And just fyi, our body actually prefers to use ketones because it is a much cleaner, more efficient fuel source. Also post-workout, you very likely go into a state of ketosis. Your body is trying to hold onto its glucose stores to provide energy for your muscles. So it's naturally going to switch over to ketone burning. P.S. when we are born, we are in a state of ketosis.
Keto doesn't care about calories It's true some people in the keto community say calories don't matter. And in my personal opinion, weight loss is a hell of a lot more complicated than calories in vs. calories out. But at the end of the day, if you are consuming more calories than you are burning, you will gain weight. But the thing about keto is that by using ketones as your primary fuel source, your leptin (hunger hormone) becomes suppressed. That along with the fact that eating fat is satiating af, makes it so much easier for you to eat less and be in a calorie deficit. Keto doesn't pay any attention to time restricted eating or intermittent fasting I'll keep this one short. I don't think I have met ayonen who is doing keto who isn't also doing IF. It just works so fucking well together. And like I mentioned, you just aren't as hungry all the time. So fasting becomes super easy to do.
Keto is a high animal protein diet Wrong. If done correctly, Keto is actually a lower protein diet compared to the standard North American diet. In fact, when you eat too much protein, your body converts it into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. So, again, Jillian is misinformed. You are depriving your body of fruit that are filled with anti-oxidants Finally, there is this load of nonsense. When I think of fruits that are loaded with anti-oxidants, I think of berries. Newsflash, you can eat berries on a keto diet. Jillian also makes it seem like only fruit has anti-oxidants and polyphenols. Turmeric, olive oil, spirulina, rosemary, and a bevy of others have a shit ton of polyphenols. And to add insult to injury, she mentions mangos, papaya, and pineapple, three fruits with the lowest amount of anti-oxidants. So I'm not entirely sure her point here. So where does that leave us? Well, I think Jillian Michaels is scared. For years she has advocated for a certain way of eating and keto completely debunks this. I mentioned these counter points on one of her Instagram posts. And guess what, I was swiftly blocked. Me. Because I am so influential in the health and wellness community? I created this website four days ago. If that isn't proof enough that what she is spewing is complete bullshit, I'm not sure what is. What's really funny to me is that I am not even pro-keto. I think there is tons to be said about resistant starches, thyroid regulation, and glucose requirements for weight training that the keto diet fails to address. But Jillian doesn't mention any of this. The fact is the keto diet isn't profitable. Jillian, if you or anyone on your team reads this, remember why you got into health and fitness in the first place. Please stop spewing inaccurate information to serve your biases and profits. You are supposed to be helping people. It is sad that you are sacrificing people's health in order to turn a profit or create publicity. You are so influential. Use that influence for good. I beg you. If you are on the keto diet and seeing positive results, don't let Jillian Michaels bring you down. Just know that me and countless others love and support you.
