When it Comes to Weight Loss, Calories Don't Matter

The idea that calories don't matter when it comes to weight control is partly true. Of course, eating too much is going to cause weight gain. There is no escaping that. But the old idea that all you need to do to lose weight is restrict your calories is false. The truth is, weight loss has a ton of variables to consider. Your hormones play a huge role. In fact, for most overweight people, restricting calories is not going to help. It might even cause weight gain. In order to see sustainable progress, you need to stop counting calories and instead, start paying attention to what you eat. On Instagram, there are too many pages focussing on calories. They spit out content claiming that what you eat doesn't matter. They cite studies of people losing weight eating a junk food diet. They insist that being in a caloric deficit is all that matters. I call bullshit. Oprah Winfrey recently invested in Weight Watchers, a well known calorie restricting diet. Do you think she would invest in it if their system actually worked?Fuck no. Because calorie restriction doesn't work. Your metabolism is going to slow down, and your caloric needs are going to shrink. That's why contestants on the Biggest Loser overwhelmingly gain back all the weight they lost. The issue with most overweight people is that their body cannot use insulin properly. Insulin is your storage hormone and blood sugar regulator. Sugar, believe it or not, is toxic for you. Insulin aims to store excess sugar into different cells in the body. But when you have a history of over consuming sugar, your body becomes insulin resistant. This allows for excess sugar to be stored as fat. Hence why a lower carb diet is very effective for fat loss. Carbohydrates induce the biggest insulin spike, which for insulin resistant people leads to more fat storage. Calories definitely matter in the sense that eating more will keep your insulin levels high. But thinking calories are the be all end all of fat loss is ludicrous. Your body has no idea what a calorie is. The solution is simple. Start paying attention to what you put in your body. You don't have to be perfect. You can splurge for sure. But thinking you can eat whatever you want as long as you are in a caloric deficit is a short term solution. You might lose weight initially but eventually, both your waistline and overall health will suffer. So next time someone pontificates about the importance of calories, shrug it off. Know that you do not live your life centred around calorie counting. You are much better than that. You are swell. Stay Healthy, Stay Fit, Stay Lit, Ocho #calories #iifym #healthyfood
